‘I WAS ASHAMED’ Dancing On Ice’s Vanessa Bauer reveals she suffered from eating disorders after being called fat at 13.
DANCING On Ice beauty Vanessa Bauer has bravely opened up about her eating disorder battle – admitting that she struggled with “mental health issues” after being called “fat” at the age of 13. The 22-year-old star shared an empowering photo of herself in her underwear as she told her followers that they aren’t “alone”. In the snap, Vanessa strips down to a nude bra and knicker set.
She has her glossy dark hair curled and loose down her back and is wearing natural make-up. Captioning the photo, the professional ice skater wrote: “I posted this before but I’m reaching many more people now and it’s so important to spread the word.
“Before I started shows I would have never thought I’d be comfortable in front of the camera in a bikini or much less in underwear!
The German star went on to reveal that after four years she was unable to “handle the pressure” and ended up suffering from depression in addition to her eating disorders.
Eventually, Vanessa’s skating coach noticed but instead of helping her, she abandoned the star.
Vanessa continued: “My coach found out about my MENTAL HEALTH SITUATION and didn’t want to have anything to do with the girl who ended up in psychological therapy!!
“It was the most devastating years [sic] of my life but I still managed to hide the whole situation from everybody around me.” Vanessa believed that she was failing because of her mental health issues – even revealing that she was “embarrassed” of her struggle and thought that she would have to “hide” her weakness for the rest of her life.
She concluded by urging any of her fans who are struggling to get the help that they need, sharing: “I am now unbelievably proud of myself for how far I’ve come. “I have fallen in love with taking care of my body and I’m still working on my mind!
“If you are struggling SEEK HELP. Admitting, accepting and sharing are the first steps to recovery. You’re not alone” Vanessa was inundated with praise for her inspiring post, with one follower writing: “Well done for sharing this.
“More people need to see and hear what others have gone through and come out the other side!!” Another added: “So touched with your post that I felt compelled to respond and just reiterate, you are not alone, it takes deep emotional intelligence and courage to share your journey.”
A third said: “That’s such a strong message @vanessabauer_skates you should be proud of yourself.”
Vanessa is currently partnered with Wes Nelson in Dancing On Ice, with the pair regularly topping the leader-board thanks to their impressive routines. In recent weeks, the skater has hit the headlines following Wes’ split from his Love Island girlfriend Megan Barton-Hanson. Megan publicly lashed out at the star at the time, admitting that she was “jealous” of the beauty’s relationship with Wes.
